In his statement, Acting Executive Director Floyd said, “As our workforce continues to thrive, DEW is committed to spending the rest of 2023 engaging rural communities to help people find work and employers find their workers.” He continued to share that the Road Trips rural initiative will kick off in May to bring agency resources, career coaches, and other partners to the state’s rural communities through local career fairs. DEW Acting Executive Director William Floyd said in a statement, “The labor force participation rate jumped to 56.1% from February’s rate of 55.9%.” It is important to note that although the state’s labor force is improving, BLS data shows that South Carolina has the third worst labor force participation rate in the country, staying slightly above West Virginia at 54.6 percent and Mississippi at 54.4 percent. ![]() The labor force, defined as people working plus unemployed people looking for work by DEW, increased to 2,393,147, a significant increase of 11,040 from the February 2023 estimate. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported the national unemployment rate at 3.5 percent, so South Carolina continues to have a lower unemployment rate than most of the country. The data showed a slight increase of 392 individuals to the unemployment total however, the adjusted unemployment rate remains stable at 3.2 percent.
